Gilles Peterson. A LondonJazz Q & A and a charity pop-up vinyl shop

Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings has been in touch with us about a special pop-up vinyl shop on Record Store Day, Saturday April 16th at CAMP in City Road EC1.

"Fellow vinyl enthusiasts can browse to their hearts' content through rare soul, jazz, groove, funk, and African records from Gilles' favourite UK dealers and special live auctions with generously donated finds from celebrity ‘fans’ including Thom Yorke, Erykah Badu, Four Tet, Zane Lowe, Rob Da Bank, Jamie Cullum and more…

All record sale proceeds will go to the Steve Reid Foundation. Steve Reid was an amazing drummer with a long and illustrious history that stretched from working with James Brown, Miles Davis and Fela Kuti through to his own Steve Reid Trio and more recently working with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet). He died from throat cancer in the US in April 2010 without money for treatment that could have saved his life. The aims of the foundation are to fundraise on behalf of struggling musicians in need of help and support."

We took the opportunity to do a quick Q & A by email with Gilles Peterson

LondonJazz: Did you have a particular connection with Steve Reid?

Gilles Peterson: Ever since he reached out to me with cassettes of his live shows in europe we became close friends.I vividly remember Steve playing his most free impro Sun Ra type rhythms to a bunch of head ravers in Sheffield - and converting them!

LJ: And do you have a favourite album

GP: It's all about 'Lions of Juda' from his album 'Nova'

LJ: You're involved with the jazz version of BBC Discovering, right?

GP: Yes. I just did some discovering through Jez Nelson jazz on 3 show - was in panel with Jamie Cullum and Jez checking some great new UK jazz

LJ: And what jazz are you listening to at the moment?

GP: I'm just listening to Mike Ladd with Leo Tardin...strong...also new Matthew Halsall...and I've signed a brilliant jazz singer from Dagenham called Zara Mc Farlane.
